Barwell Island Light - This beacon light was installed on Barwell Island by the Coast Guard in 1945. Barwell Island is a rock pinnacle located off the tip of Cape Resurrection at the mouth of Resurrection Bay, approximately 18 miles southwest of Seward. The light was 412 feet above sea level and could be seen up to 15 miles away, depending on the weather. The light operates on direct current from banked batteries and could operate up to a year without servicing. It was shut down in 1957 in favor of another light in a better location. It was removed in 1981 by the Coast Guard and brought to the Museum. Milepost 47, Parks Highway. Alaska Museum of Transportion and Industry. ~June 28, 2006 |
